Large cardamom is a perennial herb with underground rhizomes and 50–140 leafy shoots, each 1.7–2.6 m tall bearing 9–13 glabrous leaves. It has condensed yellowish flower spikes, each producing 10–15 reddish-brown, round or oval trilocular capsules containing many seeds.
